Stu Simmons has been a bladesmith for 20 years. No two weapons he crafts are ever alike. His style is ever-changing and evolving, so each weapon is different from the one made before it. In addition to swords, Simmons has also created knives, pole arms, axes, daggers, staffs, and even a few guns. He has also fashioned miniature weapons for collectors. Stu is mostly self-taught and truly loves working the metal to see what it will become. "It just kind of flows for me," he says, adding that the metal will show him what shape it wants to take. Stu is always interested in learning new techniques. To learn the Damascus forging method, Stu trained under Herb Derr. He has also experimented with techniques such as differential heat treating to find just the right qualities for his blades. Experimenting has lead Stu to craft many unusual knives. Simmons often uses recycled materials when forging his weapons, such as rebar, saw blades, railroad spikes, springs, files, and anything with enough carbon to make a knife blade strong and hold an edge. He has even incorporated the metal from a meteorite into the Damascus blades. Simmons does all of the work from his home in beautiful Highland County, VA. The peaceful setting offers inspiration and space for his art. He has traveled with a small forge to various festivals and shows, and plans to attend more with his wares. Simmons also participates in local parades and festivals with his horse, Raven.
